<image:caption>Buddy Check For Jesse (BCFJ) is a grassroots Canadian Charity that helps coaches support youth mental health through the power of sport. BCFJ was started by Dr. Stu Gershman, a sport medicine physician in Victoria, BC, to honor his son Jesse, who died by suicide on October 29, 2014. BCFJ empowers coaches to bring mental health education and awareness “into the dressing room.” Coaches have an incredible role in our youth’s lives and BCFJ believes that these coaches, who are well-respected by the youth they coach, are in a unique position to help raise awareness about mental health issues with their players. As an added bonus, players also benefit on many levels knowing that their coaches care about them. There are downloadable resources on our website for teams, coaches and organizations to have a “Buddy Check Talk” as part of a Buddy Check weekend/event. The idea behind giving a Buddy Check Coaches Talk is to create an environment where teammates support and “Buddy Check” one another. We aim to normalize talking about how we’re feeling and de-stigmatize mental health challenges and disorders. We strongly believe that our youth will change the future through kindness, compassion, and tolerance in our communities. Hopefully this will allow more individuals to come forward and receive help and support. Raising awareness and educating our youth in the area of mental health is something that most sport organizations are struggling with. Our message is simple, impactful, and easy for coaches, teams, associations, and sport bodies to deliver. Large numbers of youth can be reached in a short period of time in an environment that kids want to be in, their chosen sport. <image:title>Allen Physiotherapy Services - Laser Therapy</image:title>
<image:caption>Laser Therapy-How does it work? Laser therapy produces an photochemical reaction various cells in the body. Photons are absorbed by mitochondria and in the cell membranes by chromophores which are photosensitizer’s that can generate reactive oxygen following irradiation from laser. The mitochondria will produce photo energy which gets converted to electromagnetic energy in the form of ATP which is the body’s energy source. This provides required energy for the body to repair itself. Cell membranes also show an increase in permeability which allows other physiological changes to occur; such as, allowing the bodies cleanup cells such as macrophages and repair cells such as fibroblasts to function more effectively. In other words the energy produced from laser is converted in the body for energy needed to help prepare itself and change inflammatory and pain reactions less reducing pain inflammation and enhancing healing rates.</image:caption>
